What Is an Industrial Electrician?

An industrial electrician looks after electrical equipment in an industry by testing, repairing and maintaining it. Industrial electrician services employ such electricians, and some work independently.

Industrial electricians are generally employed by steel producers, electrical firms, motor vehicle manufacturers, mining companies and some parts manufacturers. Besides having basic electrical knowledge, they acquire special skills like the repair of robotic equipment, and hence there is a great demand for them.

All electricians working in the industry must have a high school diploma, with basic math and science, after which they specialize. High school graduation should be followed by an apprenticeship program of 9000 hours.

Since robots are popular in the manufacturing industry, an electrician who can repair and maintain them can get a well-paid job today. He should be able to understand blueprints and visualize spaces after his training.

The electrician’s job is not easy, and the industrial electrician has to face even more difficult conditions. Work conditions can be confined spaces, tight spots or the top of a machine. The electrician should be a good team-worker so that communication with co-workers and plant managers is easy.

The job can be stressful, as the electrician may have to attend to a machine during off-hours if needed. Most electricians who are employed work in shifts and have clear working hours.

An industrial electrician cannot be promoted or shifted to another position in a company. If he gets a promotion after a period of five years, he may be given some managerial jobs to supervise projects and check the work of the junior electricians.

Industrial electricians can get jobs through websites or by calling manufacturing plants and through job placement agencies. Those who educate themselves about the current technological trends are successful in their line of work.
