Whole House Surge Protection

We generally curse when there is a power failure because we can’t use our appliances and other electrical devices. There is another mischief maker that we need to be aware of and that is, strangely, having too much of power. An electrical surge, like the name implies, is a sudden increase of power that flows through the wires. Power surges can cause damage to all electrical appliances in the home such as microwaves, entertainment systems, refrigerators, computers, phones, etc. To put it in a nutshell, a power surge can damage ANY device that has components such as electronic sensors or timers.

Sadly, just like a power failure, there is no way to prevent a power surge from happening. However, there is away to surge protect your entire house. AHA!

It is now common practice to equip a home computer with a surge protector, which is also called a surge suppressor. First of all, you need to make sure that your entire electrical system is grounded. Without proper grounding a surge protector will not work. Before any surge protection is installed in your home, you need to have a professional electrician test the power distribution in your home.

Surge protectors can be installed in pre made homes to protect the whole house. This way all your electronic devices will be protected from any sudden changes in voltage. If however, the power surges seem to happen in quick succession, it may be advisable to switch off your appliances and even switch off your circuit breaker for a little while. As uncomfortable and annoying as this may seem, it will save you a lot of money in the long run.
