Why Should You Upgrade Your Electrical System?

When the electrical system at home is old, upgrade it with new technology for your home safety. Home builders have some strict codes to follow, and often your new electrical appliances like a new microwave, an air-conditioning system or any other load-bearing appliance may not run without an electrical remodeling upgrade.

For your residential electricity, an electrical system upgrade should be done by a professional electrician. There are some important factors to be considered when you plan this project.

If you have outdoor, kitchen and bathroom circuits, you must have a special ground-fault circuit interrupter circuit breaker or a GFCI, so that there is no danger of electrocution. This kind of breaker needs frequent testing, and hence should be located in a convenient spot.

Often, the amperage needs to be upgraded as well, especially if it is an older home. The electricians will probably upgrade your electrical service to 100 amps. To make work easy for your electricians use metal stud framing, not only because it is inexpensive, but because it has pre-drilled holes. Conventional wood framing is the next option. Log homes and concrete walls are difficult to work in, because it is not easy to shift conduits once they are fixed.

Use suitable fixtures for your rooms. There are several kinds of fixtures, and each one serves a definite purpose. The ceiling fixture provides general lighting, whereas a pendant light is focused on a specific area. You also have strip lighting, wall-mounted fixtures and track lighting which are individual fixtures and often adjustable.

Most of the household major appliances and heavy electrical equipment require 220-volt current, and it is advisable to upgrade to 220 volts if your home electrical circuit is still on a 120-volt line. Professional electricians can explain all the technical details before they embark on the project.
