Tips for Maintaining Electrical Safety

Electrical safety is the keyword that should be strictly kept by anybody working with electricity. Even the most experienced electrical contractors should follow the following tips for their safety.

If you are trying to work on some electrical problem, where you are unsure, just do not venture to try your hand at it.

After all, there are some hidden dangers of electricity and electrical components, which may be totally unfamiliar to you. Just hire a professional electrician to carry out the job.

Wear appropriate safety gear like safety glasses, rubber-soled shoes, gloves and dust masks. This will prevent you from getting hurt when you are working with electricity, electrical devices, tools, boxes, wire, panels and equipment.

The most important step to electrical safety is to turn off the power to the circuit at the main service panel. You could also just disconnect feeding the circuit where you are working.

Make sure the power is disconnected by testing through electrical testers. You can use a non-contact voltage tester, and make sure whether the test is working by testing it on something that is functioning.

When you turn on the circuit breaker in an electrical panel, stand on the side of the panel and turn around to check whether something blows up or if there are sparks.

Hand protection is also an important feature for electrical safety. Safety gloves are a good protection not only from sharp edges of cables, boxes, panels and tools, but also from any extreme conditions. You are safe from an electrical shock if you wear rubber gloves and high voltage gloves.

Safety glasses protect your eyes from the dust, as well as from flying fragments from cutting wires, for example. Dust masks and ear protection like ear plugs are also necessary to protect your lungs and your ears from getting damaged. All these tips will help to keep you safe and protect you from the hazards of electricity. For additional safety tips, consult qualified electricians.
