Ready for the Job: Electrician Safety Measures

When electricians are ready for the job, there are certain safety measures to be taken. If necessary protection is taken, it can even save the electrician's life. The United States governments as well as several organizations like the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are working towards making work places for electrical jobs safe not only for electricians, but for all individuals.

Electricians should always wear tight-fitting clothes to prevent clothes from getting stuck in any machines. It is advisable not to wear any jewelry made of silver or gold, as they are good conductors of electricity. An electrician on the job should wear a hard hat, safety shoes and keep ear plugs and goggles with him. Work shoes with oil and grease-resistant soles are ideal and if the location is wet, rubber boots are perfect. Long hair should not be left loose, as it might get in your way while working.

Before starting work with any kind of electrical equipment the electrical power must be disconnected from it, even before inspection. In fact, any electrical equipment under repair must be locked out and tagged out as an electrical safety measure not only for the electrician, but for everybody around the area.

The terms locking out and tagging out of equipment are common words used during electrical work. If a lock is installed, it implies that the power is not to be turned on. Tagging out is to affix a danger tag on the source of electrical power, informing others that the equipment can only be used after the danger tag comes off. The name of the employee with some other information is generally written on the tag. Above all, electricians should think of their safety before they venture into their jobs and equip themselves well with safety measures.
